How Failed Payments Are Retried

PayLoop Team··3 min read

Sometimes a card payment is declined even though the customer wants to pay, for example because of a temporary balance issue or a problem at the bank. Some of these payments go through when they are tried again later. PayLoop can retry them for you on a schedule.

Which payments are retried

Only temporary declines are retried, such as insufficient funds or the bank being unavailable. Declines that mean the card should not be used, such as a lost or stolen card or a closed account, are never retried. In those cases the customer needs to provide a new card.

The retry schedule

The default schedule spaces retries out over two weeks. You can change it.

  1. 01
    Day 0
    The payment is declined.
  2. 02
    Day 3
    First retry.
  3. 03
    Day 7
    Second retry.
  4. 04
    Day 14
Final retry. After this, your settings decide what happens next.

Your settings

  • The number of retries and the days between them.
  • Whether retries are on at all.
  • What happens after the last retry, for example cancelling or moving on to the next billing date.

Card network rules

Visa and Mastercard limit how often a declined card can be retried. Keeping retries spaced out and stopping on permanent declines keeps you within those rules.

In PayLoop
Every retry is logged against the order, so you can see each attempt and its result in the dashboard.
